MG SocialCare Foundation primarily focuses on marginalised communities and individuals in need of development activities to promote financial empowerment. In this blog article, we focus on challenges faced by the transgender and elderly community in India, and what steps can be taken to alleviate these obstacles.
Individuals belonging to LGBTQIA+ communities such as the Trans community face many challenges in various aspects of their daily lives. Social challenges such as stigma, exclusion, and harassment are frequently faced by the community. It is also utmost difficult to attain proper education and employment opportunities are often denied due to discrimination. Lack of employment and accessible services such as healthcare lead to a poor quality of life and can lead to many deep rooted issues that severely affect individuals of the trans community.
Senior citizens in India face a multitude of challenges that impact their quality of life. Health issues such as chronic diseases, limited access to healthcare, and mental health concerns are prevalent. Inadequate pension schemes or savings force many senior citizens to continue working in low-paying jobs. Elder abuse and neglect, often perpetrated by family members, add to their vulnerability and social isolation. Inability to adapt to technological advancements leave many elderly individuals unable to access essential services and information. Additionally, inadequate housing and lack of elderly-friendly infrastructure further complicate their living conditions.
Addressing the challenges faced by senior citizens and transpeople requires a multifaceted approach that involves policy reforms, community support, education, and advocacy.
For transgender people, legal reforms are essential to ensure recognition of their rights and protection from discrimination. This includes enforcing anti-discrimination laws in employment and education. Access to healthcare should be at high priority, with sensitization of healthcare workers and provision of transgender-specific medical services. Economic empowerment through skill training programs and employment initiatives can enhance their financial independence. Tackling discrimination and social stigma in all spheres by raising awareness and protecting the trans community should be a must.
For senior citizens, improving healthcare access and services tailored to their needs is crucial. This includes expanding geriatric care facilities, training healthcare professionals in elder care, and ensuring affordable medication and treatment options. Financial support through enhanced pension schemes can alleviate economic hardships and the pressure to continue working at an old age. Promoting social inclusion and combating ageism through awareness campaigns and community activities can reduce isolation. Digital literacy training for senior citizens can be implemented.
MG SocialCare can extend its support by offering tailored skill training programs designed around the needs and requirements of senior citizens and transgender people. This could include administering Skill Training in handicraft skills, digital marketing and literacy. By empowering these groups with practical skills, MG SocialCare can promote financial independence, social inclusion, and overall mental well-being within these communities.
Educational initiatives aimed at raising awareness about the challenges faced by both groups can promote empathy and understanding in society, leading to greater acceptance and inclusion in social and professional circles. By addressing these aspects comprehensively, society can create a supportive environment for senior citizens and transgender people alike.
Collaborating with local sponsors and organizations, MG SocialCare can create a supportive environment that fosters personal and economic growth among elderly and transgender populations.
